picking the Oscars
It's interesting how for the 2nd straight year in a row, the movie that we decided on seeing (at Reno during the snowboard trip), the movie that no one really got, ok the movie where at least one person dozed off in, ended up being a big time Oscar nominated film.
We all thought Babel was pretty fucked up, and that the ending of No Country for Old Men was wack. We did all thought Javiar Bardem was fantastic.
Dec is when all the Oscar contenders are released, and it's probably no coincidence that we were all fatigued and bought tickets for the 12am showing.
4GB of RAM and counting
Vista x64 is much more responsive now, all apps start up lighting fast. Not so sure about game compatibility yet but everything should be shifting towards 64-bits so I'm ahead of the curve.
Stability was a mixed bag the past week so we'll see how things fare. It was a challenging getting my PC just to POST and load Vista... playing musical chairs with the RAM slots. Thought I might have another bad module which would have meant a
third RMA. Ugh.
Probably going to add a 1TB HDD, swap out the video card for an 8800GT, and get a Dell 2408FPW. Then MacBook Pro :)
x64 !!!
After playing around with the Quad core, I tried once again to install my 4x 1gb Mushkin redline modules. Eventually figured out that one of them was bad, so submitted an RMA request to have that replaced. 3x 1gb would work, however I was still rather peeved that I was only getting ~2805 MB of RAM due to 32-bit Vista limitations.
So today decided to preemptively install vista 64-bit. 1) just to see whether or not performance would be snappier, 2) just because I had some time to kill.
The first time, I attempted to load a check/debug version, which never even made it to the main install screen. Everytime it would BSOD, due to my SATA DVD/RW being plugged in. Eventually I got it to install, then decided to reinstall using the non-debug version.
Overall, performance and compatibility has been fairly good.
quit my job
I am now jobless ... for two days. Then I start my new job at VMware.
It feels really awesome to be moving on with my career. Definitely a decision that I made for all the right reasons, namely growth opportunity. I learned a ton from EMC and appreciate all the opportunities I received. Met a lot of awesome people who will remain contacts and friends for a long time.
That being said, it was time to go. With upper management in flux, a steadily diminishing team, I really didn't have much reason to stay. It'll be interesting to see how the team responds to the challenge ... who will step up? (not my problem anymore)

interviewing
Went in for the first round of interviews... three people in the san francisco office. Almost zero technical questions, they mostly asked about my experience and background. Those questions are fairly easy to answer once you've prepared a bit. I did like the fact that this team does have a focus on some bleeding-edge technology. Definitely not going to be the same old powerpath install or solutions enabler crap :)
Even if it doesn't work out, it was good interviewing experience. I studied a bit too much on the technical side too, but at least now I know some stuff I SHOULD know.
End of an era
Treo 650 has been sold ... thanks to CL. The much maligned treo, often dropped while I was inebriated, is now a thing of the past. The enormous corporate discount that I received while purchasing it ~3 years ago meant that I sold it for around $10 less than my purchase price!
My treo was in pretty bad shape, dents and scratches everywhere, the silvery buttons rubbing off, even a mishap with some melted chocolate in my pocket.
With the Treo sold and the 8525 ebayed, it's now all about the HTC Kaiser. Which at times can be quite maddening, WM6 is not as speedy as I'd prefer and at times it's a struggle to do the simplest things. However the built in GPS, auto-focus camera, as well as the crowd-pleasing tilting screen makes it the phone of choice.
Until the next model hits the streets...
GAP
Consulting at the gap has certain perks, like the
Gapeteria or the incredible carnitas burritos found at the
Taco Truck.
However the in-fighting among divisions is reminiscent of all large corporations, especially the one I work for. The Gap people are nice for the most part, and I always ppreciate the opportunity to spruce up my wardrobe at discounted pricing.
