Yahoo Audio Search

When you are stuck in a hotel which blocks all requisite "music getting" ports. Or inside a firewalled internal network.

very basic HTML skills required... (view source code, search for .mp3 extension)

Now Gio has no excuse to bug me.

  O M G
Arrested Development just got even crazier. As great as the premiere was, this tops it by a mile. Sheer brilliance. Free chicken trick. Charlize Theron. Tobias's hairplugs. The guy from L.A. Law. Please let this show survive.

p.s. My stomach apparently isn't strong enough for the $17 otorro, I must proceed with caution.

EDIT: From reading the forums, it appears that some fans disapproved of the latest episode. To which I say "bollocks." 1) it was a really good zany episode, 2) enjoy it while it lasts. We could have had NO AD this year and some half-assed reality show instead.

  The wait is over
... for two of my favorite series. Arrested Development premiered on Sunday and it was hilarious as always. Hopefully this gets more of a fanbase, the writers are just brilliant. They've reached the upper echelon of comedy. Scary to think that a show of this calibur was on the verge of being canceled. Anyways, I know I've done my fair share of campaigning.

Season premiere of Lost is tonight, which will be the runaway winner this week. The season 1 finale didn't wrap a darn thing up, hopefully they'll toss us a few bones.

Now when the heck does Sopranos resume? Can't complain for now though, there's never been so many great shows to watch.

  Sold ....
Metal Gear Solid 4 looks incredible. Playstation 3 for me. Kojima and his team are gods.

Watched FFVII: Advent Childrens today. More like, half watching, half sleeping due my extreme fatigue. The CG is really outstanding though, made me want to learn Maya. I prefer the anime-style characters to hyper-realism. Net effect: Tifa now graces my background!

Hooked Steve on LOST, which he is finishing up. Just in time for the season premiere on Wednesday.

  March of the Penguins
kofman23: omg omg penguins
kofman23: greatest movie ever
skuotor: you just started watching it
kofman23: yup

There's an unwritten rule that any movie with a penguin is dope. eg: Fight Club had a scene with a penguin.

Pretty amazing documentary. Baby penguins are too cute.

  office
The new western division corporate office is pretty sweet. Not that the Legato building was shabby, it was way better than most of our branch offices. But being RIGHT next to Mercado has its benefits. Yahoo is next door, and their sign is bigger and more visible from the highway :(

I guess they finally decided that the West Coast is important (all the software acquitions are in Silicon Valley) and are consolidating almost everyone into the SC office. We aren't scheduled to move in until October but I'm coming every so often to use the lab.

Now for the important things, the cubicles. I know I have no right to complain seeing as how I'm never at the office. But they got a few things right. Easy access to power outlets and network ports, located above the desks. Legato cubes had the cords steathed into the sides. The cubes are smaller than Legato and there's a window in all of them as well. So you can't hide easily but why go to the office and hide?

Talking to my mentor is always awesome, especially when he is on his 3rd martini. I always get a better perspective on how things are, after talking to him.

  Anyone home?
As my coworker put it: "If I ever become that clueless at my job, shoot me." (something like that).

During the knowledge transfer I got fed up and went to a corner to surf the net. I later apologized but my coworker said he would have done the same thing.

Who is hiring these people? They can't be productive everyday.

  waaah
Another Vista build, another feature that MACfan cries foul of. Sidebar = Dashboard (= Konfabulator). Office 12 has brushed aluminum interface. Oh no. (They fail to understand that brushed aluminum is so ugly, Windows fans are revolting). Uniqueness of OSX being threatened. Must bitch about originality to compensate. They can knock Microsoft for crappy UI, then bash them if they try to improve on it. My standpoint: copy all you want Microsoft, just make it stable and secure.

Some people have all the time in the world...

P.S. I can run OSX on VMware Workstation 5. Ha!!!!

  why movies suck
The slow decline of the boxoffice is not due to piracy but to a dearth of good movies. TV shows are much more compelling nowadays, with good reason. They span much longer than the typical 1.5-2.5 hours movie. Most good writers will actually plan out the story arcs, rather than say "Ok 3 hot women and a bunch of CG effects. Go film this."

#1 at Amazon: Lost DVD! w00t. My favorite show.

TV shows can suffer through the occasional bad episode. At worst you've only wasted one hour of your life. If we are talking about the killer shows like Lost, Sopranos - even the bad episodes are never completely unredeemable. Characterization in movies nowadays are a joke, especially from the major studies. Lots of flawed contrived storylines with stereotypical setups and jokes (aka the "meet cute").

Some of the resurgence also has to do with entire TV seasons being released on DVD.
1)
we get to watch the entire season without any commercial interruptions and our own leisure.
2)
no more suffering while waiting for a resolution to last week's cliffhanger.
3)
Even if the show isn't getting the best ratings, the creator can still try to create the best work possible and hope to recoup some $$ on the DVDs.

That being said, the movie experience can't be beat for surefire hits. The occasional movie that captivates me for 2 hours deserves my $7 bucks at the movies (ahem Batman Begins).

  lucid vision
The idea of what I wanted to accomplish in the near future hit me like a thunderbolt last week. It's not something any sane person would want to undertake, but that reason alone motivates me. It will take dedication but I'm up for the challenge. No one at work will be privy to my ambitions... well maybe my manager because I'll need his support.

(don't worry, this is purposely vague)

I always knew I was capable of more and maybe I've decided to realize that.

  Holy cow!

I've learned some invaluable things from watching Densha Otoko.

Ito Misaki is gorgeous beyond belief. She looks so much taller than the listed 5' 7"; densha must be 5' 3" in comparison.

Some jokes are so hilarious I had to rewatch it. I call this stuff ... "stupid funny." No plausible way to explain it and have the same impact, you just have to see it for yourself. Yes, my jaw literally dropped in amazement at some of the material (I always thought that was just an expression ... ).

Note: While searching for a suitable pic, I kept running across the poster for Ju-On, the Japanese horror movie which she starred in... eeeeek

  How to infiltrate geek society
This only applies to some people. Most geeks are friendly and will welcome human contact with open arms. If not, chip away at that chink in the armor by causing mentioning you have a dell 24" LCD. Expound on the woes of our wireless data network and how 3G is the key. Compare and contrast the Java vs .NET programming paradigms.

  San Diego
so my key objectives were to:

1) beat the shit out of the rental car. (mission accomplished) Haven't floored my IS300 ever since gas prices exploded like crazy. I rarely do that anyways, that's no way to treat your baby. The acceleration on Chevy was lousy but it did make a loud noise when I floored it.

2) get my party on.

3) oh yeah that job thing. Went ok. I caught the security guy viewing porn on his computer. It had to be porn, he switched screens so quickly. Must be a slow job.

My hotel was on Broadway, an area I thought was rather seedy at first. It's right near the gaslamps area though, so the nightlife is pretty crazy. Everyone in this area is so tall. Most of the girls are my height at least, with heels.

Kiyo's sushi, got a great deal on otorro. $8 something for two pieces. Usually it's around $16. I know I know, most of you are like WHAAAAA but if you haven't tried otorro, don't hate. The chef was great, lots of stories, friendly banter. Of course I looked like the true sushi connoisseur - "One more order of otorro!" He imparted lots of advice but most of it was lost on me due to his mumbling. Apparently he knows Nobu from Iron Chef.

Why? because wiki is a cool buzzword.
